Bates Nut Farm

We had Ron's family out today we had a fun time at Bates Nut Farm. It was such a fun place I can't believe we have never been in the 11 years we have lived in San Marcos.

We went on a hay ride and then had fun in a hay maze. I had so much fun with the family! I did miss Dalan and Zack. Here are a few of our pictures that we took.

Kristy sent these cute pictures of Carter in his Halloween Costume. The other night when I got the pictures, I called Kristy and we both laughed and laughed. He looked so cute and chubby in his little costume. He makes my heart melt. I love him so much and am proud of Dalan and Kristy for being such great parents to this little guy. I feel truly blessed.

Zack Goes To College

The day after Labor Day, Zack and Ron drove off in our highly recycled green Honda Civic. Shelly met them in Salt Lake City and they drove off together to BYU Idaho, in Rexburg. The first day at BYU-I we got Zack his I-Card and his books. We checked him into his Apartment at Alpine Chalet. He was so excited with everything: being on a college campus, having his own place and even setting up his own room.

The next day, we went to the new student/parent orientation at the new Idaho Conference Center on Campus. It's like the Conference center in Salt Lake City, just a little smaller (it still seats 15,000 people) but still very impressive. The orientation and Zack's excitement made it a little easier to leave him in this foreign land. We still got emotional though on our drive back to Salt Lake City.

Zack loves his new roomates and we know he will excel in college.

Kristy and Dalan came for there first visit since Cater was born it was a fun week. We had a great time at the Beach, Wild Rivers, and Swimming. I had so much fun having Carter 24 hrs at the house. It was the first time Blake and Zack got to meet their new nephew.

YES I am a Grandma !!! Carter John Rohrer was born on June 15th, 2011 at 6:29 p. m. He weighed 9 lbs. 7 oz. and was 22 inches long. His head was 35 cm in diameter. This has been such a great blessing in our family. Ron and I spent a week with Dalan and Kristy last week it was so much fun to not only see Carter but see my Baby girl as a mother and a wife.

I love you baby Carter and Love being your Grandma !

Last week I went to visit Dalan and Kristy in Minneapolis. The City is beautiful . I was not prepared for the cold and dressed as a Californian I am sure I looked a bit silly and boy was I cold. We did some fun Baby shopping . Dalan works for Target and it was fun visiting him at corporate to eat lunch with him. We where able to go to The Mall Of America it was a lot of fun. I am excited to say the next time we see Kristy and Dalan they will have a sweet little Baby Boy.

Its official Zack was accepted into BYU Idaho. I am so excited for him. Kristy had such a good experience while going there I think he will too. He will find our what track he is on in about 3 weeks. It is a little strange to think that all of our children will be out of the house soon. (I still feel young). The guy in the picture looks a little nerdy but I couldn't figure out how to cut him out LOL.

Nothing says I love you more than standing on the rooftops and shouting "I LOVE YOU". At least that was until they invented blogging. So this is my modern equivalent of shouting from the rooftop why I love Shelly.

My Favorite things this last year:

We had our home videos converted to DVD and it was fun snuggling with Shelly and watching as we created our family together. We have some great memories and I was reminded how lucky I am to be married to a hot wife.

Shelly learned how to arrange flowers and it’s been nice having her amazing arrangements around the house. It’s also fun just watching her “in the act”. She gets in the creative genius mode, zoned in on the flowers and then out pops pure beauty. (We need to figure out how to have her make more arrangements this coming year. Either we need to plant flowers at home that she can use or add trips to the flower mart to our budget).

This year we seemed to try and have more opportunities to go on meaningless outings. Shelly will say “I need to run to the store” and I used to respond “OK, see you later”. A little more often I say “Wait and I’ll go with you” because spending time with her is fun. I enjoy our time in the grocery store, at Costco, or wherever it is.

Last month we splurged and got away for the weekend to Orange County. Friday night we went to Corona Del Mar State Beach and watched the sun set over the ocean and Catalina Island. Soon, another couple found our secluded area and sat on the bench next to us. We all pretended like neither of us were there (awkward), but soon Shelly was cracking jokes and had the other couple laughing. Like I said, spending time with Shelly is always fun.

We scanned in a bunch of old family photos and posted them on Facebook. Once again, I am reminded of having a hot wife.

I never thought I would be a member of a Golden Retriever Meetup Group: going to a doggy Halloween party, watching Shelly march in the Escondido Grape Day parade or going to a doggy day retreat. All of these are better with Shelly.

Going to youth conference with Shelly as chaperones and watching Shelly shot a bow and arrow. I don’t think she has ever shot a bow and arrow before. She didn’t look like she knew what she was doing, but she still shot a bull’s-eye!

Hollywood!! Shelly talked us all into going to the Dr. Phil show in Hollywood. Add another unforgettable memory to the list!

You probably didn’t know there was a Mormon Day at Magic Mountain last year, but somehow we found out about it and went. Waiting in lines at amusement parks with Shelly are the best part!

If any foreign student wants to come to America and get a taste of American culture, they should come live with us. Just ask Subaru, our house guest from Japan. Shelly can always get him to smile.

When our son Zack was crowned homecoming king at high school, I felt way out of my comfort zone. Luckily, he has Shelly as his mom and she more than filled the proud parent role. She’s a mom that any kid would be proud to have and we know who can take the credit for Zack’s social success.

To top it all off, we found out that we are going to be grandparents. I can't imagine anything funner than a "Grandma Shelly".

This year we will be together for 25 years and I have to say that my life is so much richer. Shelly is my best friend. She’s the most honest and real person I know and I’m glad she’s my Valentine.

Ever since my Mom and Dad came for the winter my Dad has wanted to ride the Sprinter so last week we took the train to Ocean Side had lunch at Ruby's Dinner and went to the movies. It was a beautiful day and the train was really nice,clean, and reminded me of the train we took in Switzerland. They loved being in short sleeves in the middle of winter.

It started with a yummy lunch at the cheesecake factory at the Irvine spectrum and a little shopping.

Then we checked into the Very Fancy Fairmont Hotel. Then Caught a Sunset on the beach .

Soap Box Derby

Our young men from church had a soap box derby. We build three cars, one for each age group (Deacons 12-13, Teachers 14-15 and Priests 16+). The cars weren't fancy, but still took several weeks to build. Luckily it was a 3/4 moon the night we raced them, so we could use the water tower access road (no traffic but also no lights). We started with practice runs not far up the hill, which proved to be a good idea since the driver has to learn to steer very straight; otherwise there's a tendency to turn too sharp and crash (we had a couple of minor mishaps).

At the end, we had three races. Teachers won all of them.

Itty Bitty Hunt

My parents will be Snowbirds this winter they will be renting a apartment in San Marcos by us. They looked into renting furniture but it's expensive. I started to look on Craigslist to see if I could find anything they could use and I scored I found a Leather couch that has a recliner on each end It looked brand new and where only asking $100 what a deal.
Then I found a Queen size Bed for $200 not as impressive as the couch at but a whole lot better then $500-1000. I am going to put the couch in our loft and the bed in a guest room after. I hate to pay full price for anything I think I may be doing more Craigslist shopping in the future

Best Day at the Beach

Today was extra warm so we decided to go to the Beach. The tide was the lowest I've ever seen, and the conditions were very nice. When you first walk in the water, there were ridges in the sand about 2-3 feet apart and almost a foot high. The water was crystal clear. Then, the sand was very flat and the water was about 6 inches deep. See how far out Zack and Subaru are and how shallow the water is.

Out further, the waves were glassy. Normally we get pulled North by the current and would have to fight to stay in the same spot. Today there was no current.
Later I noticed the strangest thing. After the waves would break to the shore, it would then wash out and form a small wave going out towards the ocean. A wave coming in would then collide with the outgoing wave for a cool effect. See video.

Remembering Barbara Smith

I noticed in the news that Barbara Smith passed away. She was the General Relief Society President for the LDS Church from 1974 to 1984. When I was a missionary in São Paulo, Brazil, I worked in the mission office and had the opportunity to pick Sister Smith up from the airport.

I had no special feelings or admiration for her before this meeting since I wasn't personally interested in the Relief Society, however I vividly remember how I felt in her presence: I felt a holiness that I had never experienced before or since. I can't explain why I felt that way, but remembering it makes me want to be a better person.

Dal and I came to visit my family for two weeks before he starts school. Our first day here we went to Hollywood with my family - my mom is always looking for family bonding activities. Last time she did this we were all extras in a movie that we later found out was rated R... we don't even watch rated R movies. This time we went to the Dr. Phil show, my 17 year old brother Zack even came. The show was about rebellious teens. The best part of the experience was before Dr. Phil came out on stage. There was a dance competition that both Dalan and Zack volunteered to be in. Lemme tell ya, Dalan can bust a move. I thought my Mom and Dad were going to wet their pants from laughing. I wish I got a video of Zack doing the worm across the stage.

After the show we got some lunch at Johnny Rockets. We attempted to take some epic pictures on our digital camera and talked about how they'd be sweet blog pictures (pathetic, huh? Blogging rules our lives). As we ate my Mom faked seeing celebrities every 10 seconds. She thought it was so funny.

Then we headed over to Hollywood Blvd. and walked the stars (which we surprisingly had never done before as a family...after all, we have been on so many shows now we're practically movie stars). We also tried to look at the hand prints, but apparently Drew Barrymore was coming soon so they had it all roped off (isnt' Hollywood so fancy?).

Hollywood was a perfect way to start our vacation. Gotta love family bonding.

Last week Blake and I went to Utah for a visit. My parents hired Blake to paint there house

He did such a great job he is very good I would recommend him to everyone. He puts my painting

While we wear there my mom and I decided to take her dog Lady on a walk. while we were walking

Lady wrapped the leash around my moms legs and down she went right on the cement. She looked and felt

horrible she had just had Eye surgery the week before so I was worried about her.

Del Mar Fair

Last night Zack and I went to the Del Mar Fair. I got to see his entry that won Best in Class for student entries (category 4575). He down-played the whole thing, but I remember thinking it was pretty clever. His assignment was to merge the logos from two companies. He merged "Pet's Mart" and "e-Harmony" to make "Pet-Harmony". It says "Where the pets go...to find their true love".

We went on a crazy ride, had funnel cake, went to the Kenny Loggins concert. It was nice spending the afternoon and evening with him.

Fitness or Flowers ?

We took Bo and Lusk to Ramona for the Day. They loved the pool and had a blast with all the Dogs.
This nice man in Ramona has a doggy Day care and he let are golden group enjoy his place for the day.
I was a little nervous bringing Lust because 1 he is just so not very behaved and 2 he is not a Golden Retriever but it is so hard to leave the poor guy at home.
The first 5 min we got their a dog growled at him and they broke out into a little fight. And then I hear a Lady yell a Dog IS POOPING IN the pool I look over and Lusk is hunched over in the shallow end doing #2
then the lady yells all the dogs out of the pool.Ron was a good sport and cleaned up the mess is the pool . I was hoping to blend in but it was more like witch of these things are not like the other song a Black dog with about 60 Golden Retrievers I laugh thinking about it
I am lucky Ron supports me in all the things I love.

I finally got my business cards and they got my cell phone wrong. I was a little disappointed because I had all these orders going but I thought they turned out cute.

May turned out to be a busy flower month for me. I started working at a flower shop

in Encintas called Flower Frenzy and helped them through there Mothers Day

week. I learned so much it is so much different working in a flower shop. I was sent out to fix a arrangement at the Del Mar Marriott Hotel it was a fun experience and I felt so important . I will be working for her doing weddings as she need me.

I had my own 25 flower orders for mothers day and was a little anxious about pulling it off.

I was happy to say it all came together and I have the best husband in the world who delivered most of the flowers Ron gets a big shout out !!!

Getting hurt by things you love

I was walking up stairs as Zack yelled "ouch" and started rubbing his head. He was taking the guitar off and as he slipped the strap over his head he bumped heads with his guitar.

Later he came in a showed me a small welt. The first thing that came to my mind (and out my mouth) was "Zack, you always get hurt by things you love". I then showed him the scar on my forehead from when I was loading a computer in my car. I love the computer (though not as much as people).

He thought for a moment and then said "I never got hurt by the piano!". I asked, "Did you love the piano?" He responded sheepishly, "no". Then a light bulb went off and he said "Girls!! Basketball!!". I proudly said "See, I told you so."

Then I asked him if he's ever been hurt at the beach. He said yes.

Lusk our 1 year old Boxer Lab Mix has been a very naughty Boy lately. I have been worried that he is going to kill himself and destroy our home. In the last few weeks he has eaten a plate of brownies, Butter, 4lb Costco bag of Chocolate chips, flip flops, books, CD, Bible, Shoes, Silk tree, Carpet,Toilet paper,and the leg of the kitchen table

Kristy and Dalan are visiting from Rexburg before Blake leaves for the Army. It rained last night so I decided to look at the weather report. For some reason, there was a "Severe Weather Alert". Compare to Rexburg with no weather alert. Is an 63 degrees with an 80% chance of rain more severe than 37 degrees with a 60% chance of snow? Or are Southern Californians wimpier so it seems to like "Severe Weather"?

Junk Yard Wars

Our combined mutual (church youth group) activity was "Junk Yard Wars". We brought "clean junk" to our church cultural hall, then split into 5 teams. The teams had a relay race to collect their junk, were armed with a giant roll of duct tape and started creating.
The final creations were impressive considering what they started with and how little time they had.

The last week I have had so much fun in my flower design class. I wish I had done this long ago! The first picture is a silk arrangement I did at home. The second is a L shape arrangement. The teacher is so talented he makes the class so interesting and fun.

I'm always making random comments as I do my arrangement. I usually get some funny looks from the other more reserved members in the class. As I was walking to my car after class, a young girl said she wanted to say something to me. I thought, "oh no, here it comes. They don't like me talking out loud". I was surprised when she told me that "for the record, I was her favorite in the class and she looked forward to my comments."
School is more fun in my 40's than it was when I was a kid! (I used to get into trouble for talking in class).

Girls Day Out

Yesterday My friend Tiffany and I headed out to Carlsbad for lunch at BJ's and a day of shopping at the outlet mall . I can never have enough shopping and yummy food.
Tiffany's little girl Audrey came with us she is such a sweet little girl I cant get enough of her. It makes me get excited of some day being a Grandma.
It was a fun afternoon and I feel lucky to have such a good friend.

Movie Night

My mom and Dad came for Christmas and Brought Lady there little Cocker Spaniel.

It was very Busy around the house with 3 doggy's to say the least!

This picture is of Blake sporting his new boots I got him to keep his feet dry wail he washes buckets.

We had a fun Christmas morning with our traditional Christmas breakfast of sticky buns

and sausage bacon bake. It makes my mouth water thinking about it yummy.

This was my first Christmas without Kristy I missed her so much. It will be fun to have them next year.

My Mom was showing Zack how to dance it was fun to watch them spend time together!

Don't let Lust fool you in the picture with all his cuteness he had fun unwrapping a few gifts and then chewing them up. I will be so glad when he is out of his puppy stage. Bo is such a good Boy I wonder what he's thinking while Lusk is being so naughty.

Christmas Party

Ron asked me to organize the church Christmas Party this year.

As a nice wife I excepted the challenge. We planned on 130 people and

at the end I was scrabbling for extra plates I think we ended up with

around 170.

It ended up turning out well. We had a ham dinner & musical program.

I am grateful to good friends for all the help. The Christmas party what a hit in the end.

Escondido Christmas Parade

Bo and I participated in the Escondido Christmas parade. It was fun and Bo loved all the attention. I am meeting Lot's of new friends and Bo enjoys all the attention.

This is Sue who is the head of the San Diego Meet up group. She has 3 Golden's of her own there are over 700 members she does an amazing job organizing the group. Her dogs are also certified therapy dogs.

Zack turned 17 on Dec 10th It feels so weird that my youngest is 17 .
Zack was born 1 mo early and still was oh most 7 pounds. I can only imagine how much the kid would of weighed if he would of stayed in an extra month.
I dread the day when he goes away to school and I don't have him around all the time.
We opened gifts and went out to Macaroni Grill to celebrate. We got to see Valarie and her new Baby Kelsey who is so cute !!

Over thanksgiving Break we went to visit Kristy and Dalan in Rexburg.
We spent some of our visit helping Kristy with her kindergarten class .
We had such a fun time watching her in action she is a great teacher.

Zack was the Royal Reader and read the kids a thanksgiving book
he also wore a cape and crown I was hysterically laughing at him
he was so funny.

We made Pilgrim hats and ate friendship stew.

On our way to Utah and Idaho for Thanksgiving we stoped in Vegas it was fun to people
watch everybody on the strip. I thought Elvis was dead he must be eating well he had put on a few pounds ! and then asked for a tip when he took the picture with us you should of seen the look on Ron's face priceless. I had fun with the family but still not a fan of Vegas.

Last week we had a baby shower at the house for Jackie Romney from
our church. We had so much fun I made a Rag quilt with matching burp clothes with
my new sewing machine. I was very impressed with myself since
I can't sew!!!
I was in charge of the games so we played the funnies game ever
where you melt different candy bars in diapers and you have to figure
out what the candy bar is.

The Boy's Are Sick

The Boys are sick !!!

Last week Bo ended up pulling out his toe nail Ouch !!!

and we made a trip to the Vet.

Then yesterday I took them both to the Vet for ear infections, kennel cough and Bo's infected toe

Bo weighed in at 89 lb and Lusk is now 6 mo old and 64 lb. What a big boy he will be.

I think Bo thought he might be going to the beach he looks so goofy.

I recently joined a Golden Retriever meet up group. I thought it would be fun to hang out with people who love there Dogs as much as I do. They do fun things with there dogs around San Diego. Anyway they will be having a Halloween party in October. I am having a fun finding Bo the perfect costume!

Kidney Stones

Last Monday I found myself at the urgent care with hopes of finding out why I was having back and groin pain. Come to find out I have 2 kidney stones that I would like to have come out as soon as possible. The Dr told me that he will take the stone’s out next week if nothing happens this week end.

Well this whole thing has made me a little crazy and I am willing to try anything to get these suckers out of me.

I thought I would do what the Drs suggest and drink 3 courts of water a day and pray for the best.

I then got on the internet and looked at home remedies that I could try to speed things along and this is what I found.

1. Coke and asparagus

2. Olive Oil and Lemon juice

3. Apple Cider Vinegar

4. Coca Cola

5. Hot Bath

So far I have tried the Hot Bath, Coke and Olive Oil and Lemon Juice 3x that one makes me to sick I don’t think I will do again .they say it is as painful as having a baby HELP ! I have felt some of the pain but I am afraid of what’s to come.

Sea World

Ron had his company party this year at Sea World it had been a long time since we had been there and had a fun time spending the Saturday together. They gave us discounted tickets, paid for parking and then gave everybody $15.00 voucher's for anything in the park. At 6:00 pm they closed the park to the public and kept it open to GA employees until 12:00 am. It was fun to have the park to ourselves not to mention not having to wait in line for rides. I really appreciate how well they treat there employee's and we had a fun cheap day thanks GA

Hike, Camp, Economize

This past weekend, I climbed Mt. Whitney, the highest peak in the contiguous United States (14,500 feet tall) with 14 coworkers. We camped the night before at Whitney Portal, woke up early the next morning and made the 22 mile hike in one day. The whole experience was a lesson in economy.

1. With 15 people riding in three cars, there was a scarcity of storage space, which I didn't properly account for since my overstuffed duffel bag blocked the back window.

2. The small hammock that I brought proved popular as we rested in the afternoon, while my tent went unused as I slept under the stars.

3. Packing for the hike was more restrictive. What could I carry on my back to provide food and water for the day and protection from potential unknown weather conditions. Conflicting goals of a light weight pack yet sufficient supplies let me confused.

The result:
-2 liters of water with a filtration pump worked mostly well with the exception of the dry spell from the last fill spot to the summit and back.
-Two much food (trailmix, dried mangoes, granola bars, etc).
-Unused warmer clothes (long sleeve underamor, windbreaker, gloves). These would have served useful in more uncertain weather conditions.

Of course all this planning in no way accounts for the brutal experience had by your feet, legs, arms,

I copied this from Kristy's Blog just to keep you posted on what she is up to. I noticed I have a lot of posts about Zack and my puppies. I miss Kristy and Dalan so much we will be going to Utah for Thanksgiving and will get to spend some time together and the rest of my family.

Life in Kindergarten

I started teaching three weeks ago.

The cons of teaching kindergarten...

-Some students have never been in a social setting.

-Some are still being potty trained.

-They like to stick everything in their mouth.

-I'm isolated from the rest of the school because I don't have the same breaks they do; so much for my social life as a teacher.

-Instsruction can only last in 15min. intervals

The pros of teaching kindergarten are...

-They ask for homework and think school is cool.

-You plan only a half a days worth of lesson plans and repeat it.

-They are cute, so when they are naughty it doesn't seem so bad.

-You have constant entertainment.

-I get a teacher inservice once a month.

-I have a teachers aide.

Speaking of thinking school is cool, I didn't realize what a big deal picture day was going to be. I was trying to get their attention and said, "put your hands on your head if your listening." A girl in my class then proceeded to give me a lecture on how her Mom would be mad if she messed up her hair.

They also do not stray from instruction. (Well, the instruction they choose.) We had "Popcorn Friday" yesterday, usually we send it home with our students and they can't eat it until they get off the bus. Well, the bus driver must have reminded them that they eat it at home, because when I gave it to them at recess for snack this one little boy said we have to eat at home--the bus driver said. I tried to explain it was just so they don't get the bus dirty and that it is ok to eat it at recess, he was having such a moral dilema, he painfully opened his popcorn bag and took a few bites.

MRS. KRISTY ROHRER

I am the new kindergarten teacher at Lincoln Elementary School. I recently graduated from BYU-I in Elementary Education and this will be my first year teaching. I grew up in San Marcos, CA (About 40 min. north of San Diego). My husband is currently going to school at BYU-I we will have been married one year in December.

Today is the first day of school, and what a day it was! We went on a treasure hunt after reading the book, How I Became a Pirate written by Melinda Long. A treasure map and clue dropped out of the book after we finished reading. We found clues in different areas of the school, learning about the different parts of Lincoln Elementary School. We also met different staff members who can help us: the librarian, secretary, and principal.

We also read, The Kissing Hand written by Audrey Penn. The Kissing Hand about a raccoon on his first day of school and how he and his Mom got through it with the kissing hand. We made our own kissing hands to give to someone that we love. I had so much fun today getting to know all of the students!

If you would like to pick up your child or have them walk home with their sibling, I will need a note saying that you give permission for them to do so and for how many days. If the bus did not pick you up before school you need to call and let the Buses know.

Die is for Dieting

Well as most of my friends know that I have always struggled with my weight and I have tried about every diet on the planet Weight Watchers, Atkins, Medifast with little or no success. Or I would loose the weight and gain it back plus more.

One of my latest attempts was a Diet called "Eat To Live" which I new I would loose on because it is a healthy diet consisting of legumes, fruit, veggies and little or no meat. Ron said he would do it with me just for the fact that he wanted to eat healthy. Well Ron ended up loosing 8 pounds while I GAINED 5 pounds who does that eating fruit, salad, and beans?

So feeling frustrated I went to a Diet Dr for the answer after testing me he found that I am insulin resistant and said all the carbohydrates I was eating where helping me gain weight!

I was excited to find him so he prescribed vitamin B12 shots , liver shots and eating a high protein diet along with fruit if combined with a protein.

I was amazed that I have lost 11 pounds this month and feel amazing. I feel hopeful that weight loss is in my future.

Wicked

Ron and I celebrated our 23 anniversary on August 20, we have both been wanting
to see the musical "wicked" so we splurged for our anniversary and got good seats.

I had heard a lot of great thins about the show and I was not disappointed it was

I wish we could see it again before it leaves it was a fun night.
